Restore

Introduction

“Restore” is a bike-stop situated on Native American land, designated as a space for rest and connection to the land. The massing is inspired by the shape of multiple tipis, a form I reshaped to have modern, dramatic design elements. The design seeks to contribute to the revival of Indigenous culture by honoring the history of the land, while creating a welcoming, accessible, and accommodating environment for all who visit.

I completed this project in my first semester of my Architectural Drafting degree. We had to design a bike-stope that would include several different amenities including a bike charging station, seating, bike stands, and a bike pump. We were also required to follow ADA standards by including wheel-chair access.

Goal

My class was required to make a bicycle rest stop which must include the following

  • bicycle recharging plug in station (for up to 3 bicycles)
  • bike rack (capacity of 5)
  • bicycle air pump service
  • seating for 4 minimum, including a wheelchair
  • shelter from the elements
  • signage
  • artwork
  • map (of adjacent bicycle paths)

Materials and Methods

In addition to hand-drafting our elevations and floor plans, we used AutoCAD which we then put into SketchUp.

Limitations

The biggest limitation with the design is that there may be areas where snow and rain could enter the bike-stop fairly easily. Also, since the openings on the sides of the bike rest stope are so public, the building is prone to burglary.

Results

I presented a project that I was proud of as I managed to create an interesting design and concept, have a clean render, and managed to meet all of the requirements and space limitations.
